Softer Side by Julia

The tone of the song is meant to reflect the firm tenderness that Tam Lin has. He is set in his ways, but underneath the hardness, there is a soft, very thoughtful inside.

Chorus:
Show me your soft side
This line of the chorus is like Matt and all characters wanting Tam Lin to show his soft side, and supporting that side when he does show it. The first time Matt gets a glimpse at Tam Lin's soft side is when he must choose his body guard "When Matt looked into Tam Lin's eyes, he was surprised to see a glint of friendliness. Friendliness was so rare in Matt's life, he instantly pointed to the man (Farmer 63)".
O-oh
Show me your soft side
Yet stand your ground
This line is meant to communicate that although he has a soft side and should embrace it, Tam Lin must remember all aspects of himself, and that he also shouldn't give up what he believes, even if that might mean fighting for it and at times being harsh.
Show me your inside
This line is to say how although the outside is harsh and, if you see the inside, it is much deeper.
Together, trust can be found
Between Matt and Tam Lin, a bond can be formed for them to use their strengths and who they are, and with that, they trust each other, and have the ability to stand up against others and for what they believe. For example, "I hope I can count on you to keep a secret (Farmer 79)" (Tam Lin speaking to Matt in regards to the Oasis).

Verse 1:
Known for your darkness
The role Tam Lin has been given by society is a harsh body guard, with the origins of a criminal. From the outside, he is known as a menacing man who you don't want to mess around with.
Yet inside you do gleam
In contrast to the assumptions I explained above, this line indicates that truly, Tam Lin has reasons for any harshness, and his intentions are deep and for the better.
Known for the past
Tam Lin's role was decided by his past, and the views of others are based around it, oblivious to his intentions and the true meaning of what he does and what he lives for.
Dread and greed, it seems
When Tam Lin bombed the building and killed so many children, it would be seen as an act of evil and selfishness, and greed. However, from what we know, deep down it seems that there was a justifiable reason to it all. Hugh to Matt, referring to Tam Lin: "He was a Scottish nationalist, see. Wanted to bring back Bonnie Prince Charlie or some other fat slug. He wasn't motivated by beer like the rest of us (Farmer 177)".

Chorus:
Show me your soft side
O-oh
Show me your soft side
Yet stand your ground
Show me your inside
Together, truth can be found

Bridge:
Inside there is much more, together we can see
This line is to indicate that when Matt and Tam Lin are together, we see Tam Lin's true inside, and his soft, deep, thoughtful spirit.
Inside there is much more, together, better we’ll be
Together, Matt and Tam Lin can achieve more and are able to set goals and make plans that might actually work, without being as harsh as Tam Lin may have been, or as unknowing as Matt would be.

Verse 2:
Your tough side’s what they know
El Patron, and everyone in general, sees Tam Lin for his harsh exterior. At first, even Matt was taken aback by his physical appearance "The man was so large and dangerous looking. It was like having a tame grizzly bear in your house (Farmer 67)".
Yet it’s only half of you
Yes, Tam Lin has a soft side, but that isn't to say he isn't harsh and serious too. That is one half, the deep, soft side is the other.
Your outside always shows
Of course, the harsh exterior is something he can't hide, whereas what's inside isn't always visible.
While inside’s just seen by few
To the majority, Tam Lin is still that harsh guy, but there are those few who experience the inside, and once its seen, its clearly visible.

Chorus:
Show me your soft side
O-oh
Show me your soft side
Yet stand your ground
Show me your inside
Together, truth can be found
